Practical preparation

A useful technical enquiry.

A few specific details can turn “an LC/MS for sale” into a configuration that can be reviewed sensibly. Use this guide to assemble the information already available to you.

Start with a configuration map.

List the main platform, source, separation modules, pumps, autosampler, chiller and workstation. Identify the manufacturer and model of each. Mark items that are shared, missing or excluded from the proposed sale.

Describe the evidence you already have.

If available, include recent tune or performance reports and service records, with dates. Explain what the instrument was doing when last used and describe known issues. A photograph of a powered display is not a substitute for a performance record.

Make software part of the discussion.

Record the acquisition and analysis software names and versions, the workstation and any licence information available. Transfer rights and support arrangements need to be confirmed for the specific system; do not assume they follow the hardware.

Plan specialist preparation separately.

Share whether the equipment is installed, stored or already disconnected. Identify site access and timing constraints. Agree qualified deinstallation, decontamination, packing and collection responsibilities before any work starts.

Start with the equipment you have.

Send the model, configuration, condition and location. Attach photographs and any relevant records to your email.
